Natural Dyes & Fiber Art | Palette Swap Collection
My work bridges contemporary fiber arts with deep historical processes, exploring the intimate dialogue between material, time, and heritage. For the Palette Swap exhibition, I am presenting a selection of naturally dyed textiles (including wool, silk, and cotton) alongside experimental pieces and a hand-painted mordant print on silk using indigo and weld.
Every textile in this body of work has been dyed entirely by hand using botanical and natural colorants, including cutch, pomegranate, madder, weld, indigo, and cochineal. For the vast majority of human history (up until the discovery of the first synthetic dye in 1856) natural dyes were the sole means of adding color to cloth. Working with these earth-derived pigments is an act of grounding; it allows me to physically and conceptually connect with the natural world. Furthermore, these ancient processes serve as a living link to my ancestral lineage, bridging modern-day Persian textile traditions with the foundational techniques practiced by artisans four millennia ago.
Through these handcrafted surfaces, I seek to honor the enduring traditions of our past while reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens of sustainability, materiality, and connection.
"Cozy" Fiber Arts Group Exhibition
Explore Vessel and Verdure, a sculptural fiber and wood artwork by Ally Scherer featured in the Cozy exhibition at Mycelium Gallery. The piece investigates the delicate tension between structural containment and wild, untamed growth, serving as a visual metaphor for the body as a landscape of organic resilience.
A Community Art Show
Displaying Interconnected in the DNA Galleries community show marks an exploration of physical weight paired with emotional endurance. The carved and painted plaster form was shaped to communicate growth, quiet strength, and unified resilience; embodying a heavy yet living canopy of interconnected shapes tethered within a larger web. This piece is exhibited as an offering to the local community sharing tactile and grounded sculptural work focused on connection.
